For children under 9 with disabilities or developmental delays, the Key Worker Model is an evidence-based approach and best practice designed to make early childhood intervention easier for families and their children.

What is the Key Worker model and its benefits?

A key worker is a dedicated therapist who becomes the primary point of contact for your child and your family.

They are an early childhood intervention professional, such as a speech pathologist, occupational therapist, behaviour support practitioner, psychologist, physiotherapist, and exercise physiologist.

The key worker model has numerous benefits such as:

  • Evidence-Based Approach: It is the best practice model and leads to more positive outcomes.
  • Streamlined Communication:  Having a primary point of contact allows for easier communication and reduces family stress.
  • Time and Cost-Effective: Reduces multiple appointments with multiple therapists, saving time and costs.
  • Personalised Support: Understands your child and family’s strengths, routine, and preferences.

How does it work?

  • Family-Centred Care: Your Key Worker will focus on the strengths and interests of the child and family, empowering you to actively participate in your child’s therapy.
  • Dedicated Support: Your Key Worker will get to know your child and family by visiting your regular environments such as school and home.
  • Holistic Approach: Your Key Worker will collaborate across different disciplines to combine therapy strategies for greater overall outcome attainment.
  • Personalised Plans: Your key worker will develop a customised plan to address your child’s specific goals and challenges.

How can your Key Worker support you?

The key worker role focuses on the identified five key areas that are important to families.
In addition, the key worker uses an integrated intervention approach to provide specialised support to address your child’s unique needs.
