Building strength, coordination, and functional movement for everyday life
Gross and fine motor skills are essential for completing everyday tasks, participating in work and education, and engaging in meaningful activities across the lifespan. Gross motor skills support whole-body movement, balance, posture, and coordination, while fine motor skills enable precise hand and finger movements required for daily tasks.

When motor skills are impacted — due to developmental differences, injury, neurological conditions, disability, or changes across life stages — individuals may experience challenges with independence, confidence, and participation. Occupational therapy supports the development, refinement, and adaptation of motor skills to improve function and engagement in everyday life.

We begin with a detailed assessment of gross and fine motor skills, including strength, coordination, balance, posture, endurance, hand function, and motor planning. We also consider how movement challenges impact everyday activities such as self-care, work, education, leisure, and community participation. From this, our occupational therapists work collaboratively with the client to establish clear, functional goals that are meaningful and achievable.
Intervention focuses on developing motor skills through purposeful, task-based activities that reflect real-life demands. Therapy is grounded in evidence-based practice and may include graded movement tasks, strength and coordination activities, fine motor precision work, and motor planning strategies. Skills are built progressively to support confidence, efficiency, and carryover into daily routines.
We prioritise skill transfer beyond therapy sessions. Strategies are designed to be used in everyday environments, with practical guidance provided to support continued skill development at home, work, education, or in the community. Where appropriate, we provide programs, resources, or adaptations to reinforce progress.
Motor skill development does not occur in isolation. We work collaboratively with families, carers, and relevant supports, and consider environmental or task modifications that may enhance movement, safety, and participation. This ensures intervention is holistic, realistic, and sustainable.
