Championing Innovation and Inclusion at the USYD OT Research Symposium

On Wednesday 22 October, Allied X was proud to be the Platinum Sponsor of The University of Sydney’s Occupational Therapy Research Symposium. It was an inspiring showcase of “Occupational Therapy in Action”, inspired by the theme set by Occupational Therapy Australia for OT Week 2025.

Hosted in the state-of-the-art Susan Wakil Health Building, the symposium brought together researchers, clinicians and students with a shared goal: sharing the work of researchers in advancing meaningful change in care and community wellbeing.

As part of our sponsorship, we supported a thought-provoking session centred on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; a topic that aligns strongly with our values and the work we do every day.

PhD candidate Rekha Khatri opened with her scoping review on gender-based violence experienced by people with disabilities from non-dominant backgrounds, shedding light on a critical gap in research and calling for greater action in this space.

Next, PhD student Xinyi Yu presented findings from her systematic review into the lived experiences of Asian mothers of children with disability who have migrated to Western countries. Her message was clear: culturally responsive support is vital in ensuring inclusion, empowerment and positive outcomes for families.

This session was chaired by Associate Professor Jo Gwynn, Senior Lecturer in the Sydney School of Health Sciences and a respected leader with three decades of experience in research, education and community health.

Our team found the entire event both insightful and rewarding. It was a true reflection of the passion within the OT profession to drive better outcomes through evidence-based practice.

Later that evening, participants heard from Professor Anne Cusick, who explored how occupational therapy students can harness generative AI in program evaluation. Her presentation set the scene for a captivating keynote panel: “AI in Occupational Therapy: Shaping Research, Education, and Practice”.

Moderated by Professor Cusick, the panel featured leading voices in innovation:

Together, they unpacked how emerging technologies are reshaping the future of occupational therapy, from clinical decision-making to student learning, accessibility and service delivery.

At Allied X, we are passionate about supporting the next generation of OTs, advancing research and championing innovation that enhances the lives of clients everywhere. Being part of this important conversation reinforces our commitment to leading positive change in our profession, today and into the future.
